The Sour Drinks

That group of cocktails collectively known as “sours” are among the most popular. In reality any drink which combines a citrus juice, sweetening and a liquor is a form of sour drink.

The classic combination is as follows:

  • 1 part sugar or sugar syrup;
  • 2 parts citrus juice (lemoon or lime);
  • 8 parts liquor.

Of course the permutations are endless and at the end of the day it is always a matter of individual preference.
Aside from whiskey sours, the above formulation can be used to produce a gin sour, rum sour or brandy sour. There are probably plenty more out there.

To make a standard Whiskey Sour you will need:

  • 1½ oz Bourbon Whiskey
  • ½ oz Lemon Juice
  • 1 tsp sugar or sugar syrup

Method:
  1. Shake all ingredients with ice;
  2. Serve in a “sour” glass;
  3. Decorate with Lemon or Orange Slice and a red cherry
  4. Add two dashes of Angostura Bitters before serving for a pleasing tate.

Note: some recipes call for Canadian Whiskey in place of Bourbon. For a longer drink, top with soda water.
