The
Old Fashioned
This
is one of the oldest and most respected of the cocktail family
and its origins date back to the nineteenth century. It is
a magnificent drink and is really a cross between a true cocktail
and a highball. Note that the main purpose of the water is
to dissolve the sugar and if you are using sugar syrup, then
the water can be omitted alltogether.
The
Old Fashioned is an American drink and is usually made with
Rye Whiskey however it can also be made with Southern Comfort,
Brandy and Rum.
As
in many drinks, the precise proportions are a matter of personal
taste and this is one that you will certainly want to experiment
with.
This
is also known as a delayed action driink. It is
stronger than a martinie but because of its high sugar content
and the fact that whiskey digests more slowly than (say) gin,
the reaction time is longer.
To
make a basic Old Fashioned you will need:
- 1
- 2 teaspoons sugar syrup or two cubes of sugar;
- 1
-3 dashes Angostura Bitters;
- Rye
Whiskey or Bourbon.
Method:
- Pour
sugar syrup and Bitters into an Old Fashioned glass and
stir with a spoon to blend;
- Add
1 oz whiskey and blend again.
- Add
two cubes of cracked (but not crushed) ice;
- Fill
glass with whiskey and stir again;
- Garnish
with Maraschino cherry.
If you are not game to fill the whole glass just add
a further 1 oz whiskey. Old Fashioned drinks can also be
served with a slice of lemon, oange or pineapple.
