The Gimlet

The Gimlet is one of the oldest of drinks and started its life on the sailing ships of old. Due to lack of vitamins in the diet of sailors, scurvy was a common problem on long voyages. To counteract the problem sailors were issued with fresh limes which stored well and which contained vitamin C. Now limes do not taste so good on their own and so to encourage those before the mast to “take their vitamins” the sailors were issued with a tot of gin to mix with the lime juice - and thus the gimlet was born.

To make a gimlet you will need:

  • 1½ oz Dry Gin
  • ¾ oz Lime Juice
  • Twist of lemon or lime

Method

  1. Stir ingredients in a mixing glass over cracked ice;
  2. Strain into a 3 oz cocktail glass
  3. Serve with lemon a slice of lemon - or even better a twist of lime.
