Reality Check

Have you ever wondered why cellular phones and short messages are so popular in the Philippines? One look at the density of landlines will give the answer. A recent MCA survey indicated that outside of Manila less than 2% of government offices had regular and reliable internet access - largely because of the paucity of phone lines available to carry a basic internet service.

The advent of 3G cellular services will make full internet and e-mail services as readily available to owners of 3G handsets as it is now through fast cable connections. However neither of the major cellular operators of such services in the Philippines is building 3G networks. To many in this country, the term "3G" means "Games, Gambling and Girls." And the local telephone companies are doing nicely in this particular market.
Once again the Philippines is in danger of falling behind the rest of Asia.
