The MCA Consumer Price Survey
MCA
is in the final stages of preparing its first
Consumer Price Survey for the Manila area.
This report will be distributed to all members
of the MCA service in the week following Holy
Week. It is the first of a new series of business
reports to be published monthly by MCA to
our members dealing with issues relating to
the cost of living and cost of business in
the Philippines.
About This Report
This report provides the results of a pricing
survey conducted in Metro Manila over the
last week of March and the first week of April
2003. As the first such price survey conducted
by MCA in the Philippines, this document serves
a number of purposes:
(a)
It provides an indication of domestic prices
in Manila covering a range of food and household
items and as determined by a shopping basket
applicable to families in the executive income
bracket.
(b)
By surveying prices across a number of retail
outlets, it provides a point of comparison
as between different retailers in the one
central area (Makati) as well as providing
a comparison with prices of similar goods
outside the Metropolitan area.
(c)
It provides a benchmark for determining average
price movements in future surveys.
Who
Should Read it:
This document is provided as part of the MCA
Philippines Subscription service. It provides
members with a ready reference point of comparison
in determining local prices. It is one document
in a series of such documents to be published
regularly by MCA and dealing with the cost
of living and cost of doing business in the
Philippines.
Abstract
A total of 300 supermarket and delicatessen
items were selected for inclusion in the first
MCA Metro Manila Price Survey. All items were
selected on the basis of being typical inclusions
in a shopping basket of a western household
living in Manila. Eight different stores were
selected for purposes of price comparison.
Only items that could be found in at least
three stores were included in the survey.
Five
supermarket chains were included in the survey
as well as a personal store chain that also
sells grocery and household items and a convenience
store.
In addition to the price survey conducted
in the Makati business district, two store
chains were selected and a limited price survey
conducted on comparable items outside of the
metropolitan area in Cavite province south
of Manila.
While the price survey focused on items commonly
purchased by an expatriate executive or A/B
Filipino household, prices of basic commodities
as determined from the government price survey
have also been included for benchmarking purposes.
