Chapter
13 -
Dealing with Emergencies
Typhoons
| Earthquakes
Other Volcanic
Activity | Other Emergencies
If
you are living in the Philippines for any
length of time you will undoubtedly experience
typhoons and the problems caused in their
wake although with any luck you will be spared
the ordeal of a major earthquake or other
seismic disturbance. Yet while these are the
two most written about emergency situations
because of their widespread and devastating
effects, yet there are other - more personal
- emergency situations that can arise and
for which contingencies need to be made. These
can cover the whole range of suffering from
medical emergencies (health and sickness,
accidents and even a death in the family),
motor vehicle accidents involving third party
injury or property damage, through to other
hazards such as fire, robbery etc.
Remember that emergency services are not as
well developed nor as responsive as in many
western countries and in dealing with an emergency
situation you will more than likely have to
draw on your own resources in the first instance.
Nevertheless you should acquaint yourselves
with the correct emergency numbers within
your own neighborhood. If you are living in
a condominium then the administration office
or concierge desk will be able to help you.
If you are living in one of the villages then
it will be the village office that will be
able to assist.
The following is not an exhaustive list but
it will be a place to start:
- Police emergency lines;
- Local building or village security office
(most are protected by private security agencies);
- Fire;
- Medical - 24 hour emergency care;
- Dental;
- The nearest 24 hour pharmacy;
- Locksmith;
- Plumber and electrician (many times you
will encounter people who claim to be both
plumbers and electricians as well as automechanics
thrown in for good measure. Usually they are
related to the person making the recommendation.
Remember that a little knowledge can be a
dangerous thing and shop around for professionals
- they do exist);
- And your lawyer.
One good piece of advice is to adopt the "buddy"
system but on a family basis assuming you
have no Filipino relatives. Agree with close
friends - preferably those who live close
by - that you can call on one another for
assistance should a genuine emergency arise.
And if you are unfortunate enough to be involved
in a vehicular accident - no matter who is
at fault legally - you will probably be held
to blame - keep your cool and call on a trusted
Filipino friend for assistance. Remember a
smile and a friendly gesture can go a long
way to cooling tempers.
