Chapter 13 - Dealing with Emergencies

Typhoons | Earthquakes
Other Volcanic Activity
| Other Emergencies

It was not so long ago that Mount Pinatubo in Pampanga province erupted and devastated large parts of Angeles City and surrounding areas. If you are living with an active volcano as your, then the best advice is probably to move somewhere else if you possibly can.

Firstly, while a volcanic eruption may give some warning, your timeline for reaction may be quite short. If hiking in a volcanic area inquire of local conditions before you set out and register with the local police authorities. Try to map out a defined route and stick to it. While the many volcanoes provide for some spectacular nature trails, the dangers may not only come from natural causes but could include encounters with local bandit groups. Keep valuables to a minimum and try to "blend."

If you are living in the shadow of a volcano, you will want to make doubly certain that you have a well thought out contingency plan and one that allows you to move quickly. If you are in the path of a prospective lava flow or debris field then your thoughts will be more concentrated on human survival than on retrieving your possessions; however a few pointers might be worth bearing in mind.

· Ensure that you have adequate cash and other negotiables ready on hand. You may want to keep these in a home safe that is fireproof;

· Plan your escape route and means of escape well ahead of time; best buy a four-wheel drive vehicle or at least have access to one;

· If at all possible make your plans in association with others so that you have a support group readily on hand and able to deal with a population that may well be in a state of panic;

· Review your home, auto and personal security. If you need to evacuate quickly, make sure your home is well secured against possible looting; take valuables with you but in a place that is well hidden.
